Abstract

This chapter delves into the experimental investigations of cobalt-chromium (Co–Cr) samples, focusing on the impact of various process control parameters during electrical discharge machining (EDM). The study meticulously examines the effects of EDM on surface characteristics, particularly surface roughness, and evaluates the biological response of the machined surfaces through in-vitro tests. Key findings include the identification of optimal EDM parameters that enhance surface smoothness and biocompatibility, crucial for orthopedic and dental applications. The chapter also discusses the significance of surface modifications in promoting cellular adhesion and proliferation, as well as the formation of beneficial phases such as phosphides and oxides. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of hemocompatibility, demonstrating how specific EDM treatments can reduce hemolysis and improve blood-material interactions.
