Abstract

The chapter delves into the practice of income smoothing in microfinance institutions (MFIs), a phenomenon where financial results are stabilized to reduce variability. It examines the effect of gender diversity on the board of directors and the impact of the 2007 financial crisis on these practices. Using a comprehensive dataset from the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX), the study employs Eckel's metric to identify income smoothing and a panel data regression model to analyze the empirical relationships. The findings suggest that a significant proportion of MFIs engage in income smoothing, with regional variations. The research also indicates that the financial crisis and gender diversity on boards influence the use of loan loss provisions for income smoothing. This chapter offers valuable insights into the governance and financial management of MFIs, contributing to the literature on income smoothing and its determinants.
