Abstract

The chapter delves into the significance of deep rolling in enhancing the resource efficiency of passenger vehicle manufacturing. It begins by highlighting the energy consumption and environmental impact of the industry, emphasizing the potential of lightweight construction and surface integrity design in reducing energy usage and CO2 emissions. Deep rolling, a mechanical finishing process, is introduced as a method to induce beneficial surface integrity states, leading to improved fatigue life and service behavior of cyclically loaded parts. The chapter then presents a concept to evaluate the resource efficiency for deep-rolled parts, focusing on two approaches: extending part lifespan and enabling lightweight design. The method is demonstrated through case studies on roller bearings and notched rotating bending parts, showcasing the potential for significant CO2 reduction. The chapter concludes by discussing the evaluation of CO2 reduction due to lightweight design, emphasizing the importance of life cycle assessments for future research.
