Abstract

The construction of ground forest roads presents unique challenges due to the diverse and often unfavorable soil conditions, high water levels, and limited availability of traditional road-building materials. This chapter investigates the critical factors influencing the choice of pavement type and structure, emphasizing the importance of surface roughness and load-bearing capacity. It highlights the necessity of feasibility studies to determine the most suitable road design, considering local conditions and material availability. The text delves into the classification of road surfaces, ranging from permanent to temporary structures, and their applicability to different road categories. A significant focus is placed on soil stabilization techniques, particularly the use of local soils reinforced with binding materials. The chapter explores innovative methods such as the addition of fine-fiber waste and complex stabilizers to enhance soil strength and durability. It also discusses the economic and environmental benefits of using cold bitumen emulsions and other by-products from the chemical industry. The detailed analysis of pavement design calculations and the impact of water-thermal regimes on road durability provides a comprehensive guide to constructing cost-effective and resilient forest roads. The chapter concludes with a compelling argument for the rational design of road pavements, emphasizing the potential for significant cost reductions and improved infrastructure longevity through the strategic use of local materials and advanced stabilization technologies.
