Abstract

This chapter delves into the essential factors for designing temporary housing solutions in emergency situations, with a focus on indoor hygrothermal comfort, energy efficiency, and passive design techniques. It discusses the importance of maintaining stable temperatures, controlling moisture, and optimizing energy performance in emergency shelters. The chapter also explores the challenges of creating thermally comfortable and energy-efficient environments with limited resources and the need for quick deployment. It reviews experimental campaigns to evaluate indoor hygrothermal conditions and investigates the effectiveness of passive and active strategies for improving indoor conditions. The chapter highlights the significance of considering the subjective experiences and expectations of refugees in thermal comfort research and the potential of renewable energy systems for improving indoor thermal comfort. It concludes that while integrating renewable energy and passive technologies into temporary housing solutions can significantly improve comfort and sustainability, cost and resource barriers remain critical challenges to implementation on a larger scale.
