Abstract

The occurrence of a procedural error in a digital voltmeter, related to the finite word length of the voltmeter’s analog-to-digital converter (ADC), is considered. Assessment of the influence of the finite ADC word length on the voltmeter’s measurement error is critical. The influence of quantization frequency and the form of the digital filter on the effective conversion word length in the case of synchronous and asynchronous quantization is demonstrated. The error of a digital voltmeter in representation of the quantization error with uniformly distributed central noise is estimated. Results of computer modeling of the process of conversion of an alternating voltage by a digital voltmeter are presented.
