Abstract

The article explores the critical role of geological properties and operational parameters on the performance of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) during muck removal. Using the Yinsong Tunnel project as a case study, the authors delve into the complex interplay between rock type, advancement speed, and rotational speed on the efficiency of muck discharge. They employ discrete element method (DEM) simulations to model muck particles and optimize operational parameters for granite and tuff stratum. The study highlights the importance of considering shape and size characteristics of muck and the coupling effects of operational parameters to enhance tunneling efficiency and safety. The findings are validated through real-world application, showcasing the practical benefits of their approach in improving TBM performance.
