Abstract

This chapter examines the influence of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and processed coarse recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) on the properties of pavement quality concrete. The study focuses on the mechanical strength, durability, and workability of concrete mixes incorporating these materials. Key findings include a slight reduction in compressive, flexural, and split tensile strength with increased replacement levels of processed RAP and GGBFS. However, the mixes demonstrated acceptable workability and durability, with a decrease in drying shrinkage and abrasion resistance. The chapter concludes that concrete mixes with 40% GGBFS and processed RAP coarse aggregates can achieve the required workability, strength, and durability for constructing rigid pavements, contributing to sustainable construction practices. The experimental program involved slump tests, compressive strength tests, flexural strength tests, split tensile tests, drying shrinkage tests, and abrasion resistance tests to evaluate the performance of the concrete mixes. The results indicate that the use of RAP and GGBFS in concrete mixes can be a viable solution for sustainable and cost-effective pavement construction.
