Abstract

This review article delves into the influence of humic substances (HSs) on phytoplankton primary production and community structure, with a focus on the phenomenon of browning waters. It explores the origin and properties of HSs, their physicochemical impact on aquatic environments, and their role in biogeochemical cycles. The article highlights how HSs affect light penetration, nutrient availability, and the structure of phytoplankton communities, leading to shifts in species composition and trophic interactions. It also discusses the geographical differences and climatic context of HS input, emphasizing the need for further research to accurately predict the impacts of humification on aquatic ecosystems. The article concludes by outlining the challenges of forecasting and directions for future research, stressing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and models to manage the impacts of browning waters in the face of climate change.
