Abstract

The study investigates the impact of residual lignin on the production and properties of Acacia mearnsii nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) suspensions and films. Using mechanical defibrillation, the research examines energy consumption, viscosity, and zeta potential of NFC suspensions with varying lignin content. The resulting films are analyzed for mechanical strength, thermal stability, and antioxidant activity. Notably, the presence of residual lignin reduces energy consumption and enhances mechanical properties, while exhibiting slight antioxidant activity. The findings suggest that Acacia mearnsii is a promising source for sustainable NFC production, offering potential cost and environmental benefits over traditional methods.
