Abstract

This chapter delves into the influence of urban environments on microclimatic variations at the pedestrian scale, emphasizing the need for precise local temperature monitoring in densely built areas. It compares data from conventional weather stations with specialized measurements taken at two closely located yet distinct urban environments in Santiago de Chile. The study reveals significant microclimatic differences influenced by urban morphology, shading patterns, vegetation, and airflow. Key findings include the impact of urbanization bias on weather data and the effectiveness of climate-sensitive design interventions in mitigating heat stress. The chapter also highlights the importance of integrating three-dimensional morphological indices to better capture the complexities of urban microclimates. By analyzing data from multiple scales—territorial, pedestrian, and microclimatic—the study provides evidence-based recommendations for enhancing thermal comfort in public spaces. The results underscore the potential of specialized microclimatic measurements and design strategies to address the challenges of urban heat islands and improve livability in densely built environments.
