BMW has unveiled a new generation of its BMW iDrive operating system. It is based on the new BMW Operating System 8 and will be used for the first time in the all-electric SUV BMW iX.

BMW has introduced the new version of its iDrive operating system, which it developed in-house. Based on BMW Operating System 8, it includes a new generation of displays, controls and software and is said to offer particularly powerful networking and data processing. The curved display forms a display network between the 12.3" driver display and the 14.9" touchscreen for the infotainment system called the Control Display.

In the information display, the driver can choose between the three display styles "Drive", "Focus" and "Gallery" on the steering wheel. On the Control Display, there is a new arrangement logic for the widgets and a freely configurable home screen. In addition, the voice-controlled "BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant" can now also act contextually. The new system is optimized for operation via voice input or the touchscreen, but it is still possible to use the iDrive controller on the center console. However, the air conditioning control is now located in the display.

BMW introduces My Modes

The new "My Modes" are intended to provide a "holistic driving experience." Initially, "Efficient", "Sport" and "Personal" are available. They combine the functions of the previous driving experience modes with special display layouts, changing colors of the ambient lighting or changing engine sounds. New features will be added via OTA updates. The new system will first be found in the BMW iX and then in the BMW i4.
