Abstract

The article explores the initiation and propagation of interface cracks in layered composite rocks (LCRs) under true triaxial stress conditions. It highlights the significant weakening effect of interface cracks on the mechanical properties of LCRs and the complex fracture behaviors observed in these materials. The study incorporates detailed experimental protocols and acoustic emission monitoring to investigate the failure mechanisms and crack initiation points. Notably, the research reveals the coupling mechanisms between interface cracks, stress anisotropy, and lithology contrast, providing valuable insights into the failure processes in LCRs. The findings have important implications for understanding and predicting fracture behaviors in underground engineering, particularly in tunneling through composite strata.
