44. Innovation by Design: Key Challenges Faced by Budding Designers Developing Solutions for Dementia

Abstract

As design research and innovation are context-dependent, projects may fail when intended outcomes do not match the actual needs. While design research is sometimes perceived as time-consuming, the findings can result in value identification and creation through innovation by design. Using a mixed-methods approach, the utility of design thinking can be measured by way of identifying key challenges in a design process and evaluating design outcomes. A qualitative study was conducted with 27 teams of students across four workshops held in local universities and design communities that used an Ideate-Prototype-Realise (I-P-R) process when designing empathetic technology for community health. Through analysis of descriptive data, the factors that hinder a well-thought-out design are examining use environment, conducting stakeholder analysis, having access to market, and prioritising key concepts. With the findings, specific methods are discovered to support designers in examining external environment and human factors.
