Abstract

The chapter examines the significance of intercultural competence (IC) in a globally diverse world and its crucial role in educational curricula. It discusses the challenges of assessing IC, particularly in young learners, highlighting the complexities of language proficiency, value assessment, and the validity of assessment techniques. The study focuses on the Mauritian context, where Intercultural Education was introduced in Catholic schools, and explores the experiences of curriculum developers and teachers in assessing IC. The findings reveal the importance of pitching the language level appropriately, questioning the assessment of values, and reporting performance in a way that reflects learners' progress. The study also underscores the central role of teachers and parents in the assessment process, emphasizing the need for a dynamic and contextualized approach to IC evaluation.
