Integrated battery charger of EVs using six-phase propulsion system

Abstract

This paper deals with an integrated charger of battery used in electric vehicles having a propulsion system equipped with an asymmetrical six-phase induction machine drive. Proposed charging system consists of a modified DC–DC (buck-boost) converter tropology, which is capable to charge the battery during plug-in and regenerative operation, and suitable to drive the propulsion system. Both step-up and step-down voltage regulation capability of the proposed tropology converter make it suitable to select a wide voltage range of battery with an adequate, but simple control in different operating modes (i.e., plug-in, regenerative and propulsion). Comparatively, proposed converter tropology uses a reduced number of components resulting in its smaller size, weight and cost. Furthermore, the propulsion system using multiphase (six-phase) induction machine drive also results in an overall improved performance of proposed system due to the implementation of efficient indirect field-oriented control. Complete system is developed on MATLAB/Simulink platform. Practical suitability, applicability and validity of control schemes of the proposed DC–DC converter on rectifier side and motor drive side converter in propulsion system have been tested on STM32F407G board employed during processor-in-loop simulation. Data transfer at high baud rate was achieved through externally connected USB-USART converter, i.e., FT32RL board between the target and host.
