Abstract

The article examines the critical role of wheel-rail interaction in determining traffic safety and economic performance in railway systems. It highlights the increasing contact stresses due to higher train speeds and axle loads, which necessitate advanced solutions to enhance wheel durability. The study introduces low-stress wheel designs and new steel grades, such as T, L, and the promising B grade with a bainitic structure, which offer superior mechanical properties and wear resistance. The research employs computer modeling and experimental testing to optimize wheel profiles, such as the K-70 and K-65, which demonstrate significant reductions in wear and improvements in fatigue life. The article also addresses the challenges in predicting wheel service life and presents a computational-experimental methodology for accurate life estimation. The findings underscore the potential of innovative materials and designs to revolutionize railway wheel performance, ensuring safer and more efficient operations.
