Abstract

The article delves into the intricate behaviors of inter-granular and intra-granular cracks in Mg bicrystal with symmetric tilt grain boundaries. By employing linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) and advanced atomic simulations, the study examines the critical stress intensities for cleavage and dislocation emission at the crack tip. The research highlights the significant influence of grain boundary structures on crack propagation and fracture behaviors, providing a detailed understanding of the microscopic mechanisms governing these processes. The findings offer crucial insights into the intrinsic brittleness/ductility of grain boundaries in Mg, contributing to the broader understanding of fracture mechanics in materials science.
