Abstract

This chapter explores the innovative use of interactive digital narratives (IDNs) and structured debates to teach AI ethics to K-12 students. The approach combines visual novels with structured discussion forums, creating an engaging and reflective learning environment. The methodology involves using the Harena platform to build narratives about ethics and AI, incorporating the Four Pillars of Learning (FPL) framework and Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The chapter details the design of the visual novel, including its branching pathways and the integration of structured asynchronous debates. Preliminary results from a classroom workshop indicate that students who explore more paths in the game tend to write longer responses in the debate, suggesting a correlation between exploratory behavior and engagement in discussions. The chapter concludes with plans for future work, including thematic analysis of debate responses and improvements to the debate feature. This approach offers a promising method for enhancing ethical reasoning and learning outcomes in AI ethics education.
