Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of interface engineering in enhancing the performance of gas sensors. It explores various types of interfaces, including electrode–sensing layer, sensing layer–substrate, and heterojunction interfaces, each playing a pivotal role in the functionality and efficiency of gas sensors. The text discusses the impact of noble metal nanoparticles on gas sensing capabilities, highlighting how materials like Ag, Pd, and Pt can significantly improve sensor performance. Additionally, it covers nano structural engineering techniques, such as core–shell heterostructures, which are used to enhance the sensing capabilities of metal oxides. The chapter also presents real-world applications of these advanced gas sensors, demonstrating their potential in fields like healthcare, environmental monitoring, and food quality assurance. The conclusion emphasizes the need for further research to address challenges such as high operating temperatures, poor selectivity, and long-term stability, paving the way for more robust and reliable gas sensing technologies.
