Abstract

The study examines how intergenerational succession in Chinese family firms affects the opportunistic behavior of non-family executives. It highlights the role of cultural factors, such as Confucian values, and market conditions, such as the professional manager system's infancy, in shaping executive behavior. The research finds that succession significantly increases opportunistic behavior, driven by feelings of unfairness and career concerns. The study contributes to the literature by providing new empirical evidence on the negative effects of bifurcation bias and authority construction during succession. It also underscores the importance of good corporate governance in mitigating these effects.
