Abstract

This chapter delves into the energy efficiency of constant versus intermittent gas central heating, a topic of significant debate in the UK's journey towards net-zero emissions. The research, conducted at the University of Salford Energy House, compares the energy usage and indoor temperature patterns of these two heating methods. Key findings reveal that while both methods have their merits, the intermittent heating pattern resulted in cooler internal temperatures throughout most of the 24-hour period due to the reduced heating time. The study also highlights the impact of heating patterns on boiler behaviour and fabric heat flux, providing valuable insights for consumers and professionals alike. The research underscores the need for further investigation into heating patterns and their impact on energy use, offering a stepping stone towards achieving the UK's ambitious net-zero targets.
