Abstract

A look at the global FinTech markets and the number of newly created FinTech businesses shows that Germany is in fifth place behind the US, the UK, Canada and India (Haddad and Hornuf 2016). However, the study conducted by Haddad and Hornuf (2016) focuses on the European market, since the representativeness of the data regarding Asia provided by CrunchBase is open to question. In terms of the number of newly created FinTech start-ups, Germany boasts the second largest FinTech market in Europe after the UK.

Footnotes
1
For the sake of consistency, the estimate of Zhang et al. (2016b) is used here. The number arrived at in the course of the empirical analysis undertaken for this book is somewhat higher, amounting to 272 million EUR. The discrepancy exists in part as a result of differences in data collection. Zhang et al. (2016b) consider 35 platforms in order to determine the market volumes in Germany, wheras our study takes 87 into account.

2
In the UK in 2015, donation-based crowdfuning comprised around 23% of the volume of the donation and reward-based crowdfunding subsegment (Zhang et al. 2016a).

3
In calculating American market volumes, the assets under management of Schwab Capital, Betterment, Wealthfront, Personal Capital and Asset Builder at the end of 2015 are used.
