Abstract

The chapter begins by highlighting the significance of maritime transport in global trade and the need to reduce its carbon footprint in line with the Paris Agreement. It delves into the IMO's Initial GHG Strategy, which sets ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 2050. The chapter then explores various candidate measures identified by the IMO, including alternative fuels like ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol, as well as energy efficiency applications and market-based measures. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with these measures, such as the need for technological infrastructure and the potential environmental benefits of biofuels. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of a multi-faceted approach to decarbonization, as no single measure can achieve the IMO's goals alone.
