Abstract

This chapter examines education for sustainable peace as a comprehensive education strategy for introducing positive change and contributing to sustainable peace in fragile and post-conflict contexts. The book aims to articulate the practice and theory of education that enables the emergence of conditions for sustainable peace. It does so by examining the agency of different actors involved in educational programs and initiatives that contribute to conflict-resilient communities and the dynamical process of their interaction with the larger societal structures. The chapter also sets out to define the concept of resilience by discussing the ideas of self-correction, openness to learning and inquiry, and adaptation to change. Furthermore, the chapter maps out the structure of the book, whose analysis will address innovative solutions as well as major issues facing education in conflict-stricken societies such as the use of memory, economic factors, gender, and extremism.
