This special issue presents papers from the 18th biennial International Coating Science and Technology (ISCST) Symposium which was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 18–21, 2016, and attended by some 200 participants from all over the world. The ISCST biennial symposia serve as an interface between scholarly research and industrial practice and are now established as the world’s premier forums for presenting advances in the understanding of the physics of wetting, the fundamentals of coating flows and subsequent solidification and microstructure development and the process technology needed for implementing these in industry.
