Abstract
In view of the immense transformations that cities are facing, whether for some of them to cope with still very strong demographic growth, or for all the cities of the world to foresee their adaptation to the necessary ecological transition, it is more than ever urgent to discuss and share the state of knowledge in terms of the dynamics of cities. This knowledge is a prerequisite for any attempt to influence the trajectories of complex systems. This chapter explains the intentions of the book and announces the main points of discussion: can we develop a universal urban science while taking into account the specificity of each city? How to reconcile the points of view of economics, geography and other disciplines in different forms of theories and modeling?
