Abstract

Space plays an important role in children’s everyday life and behavior since it is subject to their experiences, observations, and activities. Starting in toddlerhood, children explore and interact with the space that surrounds them, first by crawling, then by touching objects of different sizes and shapes and observing their positions and locations in space. Later on, children begin to understand that these objects exist beyond their direct experience by reasoning about them and their visual-spatial characteristics.

Footnotes

German original: „Geometrieverständnis ist vor allem die Einsicht in Beziehungen und Zusammenhänge, was ohne Raumvorstellung nicht denkbar ist.“

Maps do not only represent a referent space by standing for it using symbols. In addition, maps are something, in their most simplest way a flat sheet of paper. Moreover, they follow a double spatial essence in a way that they not only represent spatial relations of the referent space, but are also spatial in a sense of being in relation to space (Liben 2006).

According to Linn and Petersen (1985), those are the (a) differential, (b) psychometric, (c) cognitive, and (d) strategic perspectives. Differential studies aim to explain differences between groups of individuals, for example the effects of gender, by using a large portfolio of research methods (e. g., Coluccia & Louse 2004). Psychometric studies assume that space can be measured and quantified by means of spatial tests Eliot (1987). They aim to detect different traits of spatial abilities that show homogenity within measures in pre-defined spatial tests. Cognitive studies of spatial cognition describe cognitive processes that are typical to particular spatial tasks, although they might be solved with different performances by individuals (e. g., Carpenter & Just 1982). Finally, strategic studies focus on detecting qualitatively different ways of solving spatial tasks by individuals (e. g., Barratt 1953).

Pinkernell (2003) proposed another important model of spatial abilities in the German mathematics education literature but rather addressed their relations to geometric and mathematical thinking from a conceptual point of view.
