Abstract

The chapter delves into the growing demand for 5G technology driven by the increase in smart device usage and multimedia content downloads. It highlights the need for high-efficiency power amplifiers to support 5G's high data rates and low latency requirements. The text discusses the challenges posed by the high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and the trade-offs between energy efficiency, quality of service, and spectral efficiency. It explores the design of novel power amplifier architectures, such as Doherty and switched cascode Class-E power amplifiers, to overcome these challenges. The chapter also presents the integration of these power amplifiers into a 4-phased-array transmitter topology, showcasing the potential for high-performance 5G systems. Throughout, the text emphasizes the advantages of deeply scaled CMOS technologies, such as 22nm FDSOI, in pushing the boundaries of existing state-of-the-art performance.
