It is worth clarifying the matter here. The terms non-profit and not-for-profit are often used as synonyms, but this is not quite correct. The term “not for profit” means the non-redistribution of profits. In other words, any profits made should be reinvested in the business, not paid out to shareholders. Making a profit is however still desirable—if not necessary—for the continuation of social activities. By contrast, the non-profit clearly rejects the production of a profit.

Maslow’s pyramid is a scale of individual aspirations, in which needs are organised according to priority of satisfaction. At the base are the physiological needs, essential for survival, higher up are the needs that vary according to one’s individual path.

There are numerous studies commissioned by private/public entities and carried out by universities or research centres. One of these is the study by Deloitte and Luiss (2021), which deals with sustainable infrastructure or - as it will be called later - Environment, Social and Governance (or ESG) instruments.
