Abstract

The chapter introduces the concept of digital eco-art, focusing on Joanna Moll’s work 'DEFOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOREST' as a case study. It explores how Moll’s artwork uses the internet to highlight the environmental impact of online activities, drawing attention to the carbon footprint of digital media. The text delves into the philosophical and theoretical foundations of such artworks, including Graham Harman’s object-oriented ontology and Karen Barad’s agential realism. It argues that digital eco-art offers a unique way to engage with environmental issues, challenging traditional notions of representation and encouraging viewers to consider the material and discursive entanglements of the digital world. The chapter also discusses the broader implications of digital eco-art for environmental activism and conservation efforts, highlighting the potential of such works to raise awareness and inspire action.
