Abstract

This chapter delves into the complex relationship between markets and government interventions, challenging the traditional view that government should always intervene in cases of market failure. The author argues that markets can self-correct over time, often leading to significant improvements in social welfare. The text is structured into three main parts: first, it defines government failure and discusses a unifying framework to categorize different types of government failures. It then synthesizes empirical evidence on the welfare effects of various policies, highlighting extensive microeconomic and social policy failures. The second part defines market corrections and describes a framework to categorize different types of market corrections, presenting empirical evidence of their benefits. The final part discusses the implications for economists and policymakers, advocating for a more cautious approach to government interventions and a greater consideration of market-driven solutions. The chapter concludes with an assessment of the challenges in changing attitudes toward markets and government in a divided nation, outlining the author's perspectives moving forward.
