Abstract

This chapter delves into the intertextual genealogy of adapted versions of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, with a focus on Steven Zaillian’s 2024 Netflix series Ripley. It argues that Tom Ripley is a protean character whose amorality and sexual blankness provide successive generations of adapters with an opportunity to remodel him for their times and their audiences. The analysis explores how Zaillian’s series updates the character for contemporary audiences, emphasizing his non-sexuality and commodity fetishism, and how it uses black comedy and tedious scenes to challenge normative moral judgment. The chapter also discusses the series' critique of late capitalism, labour, and consumerism, and its commentary on contemporary cultural and political movements. Additionally, it examines the series' use of pastiche and forgery as a metaphor for adaptation, and its exploration of empathy and morality through the character of Tom Ripley. The conclusion highlights the series' unique approach to empathy and morality, and its commentary on contemporary cultural and political movements.
