This book is a follow-up to Energy in the Caspian Sea Region: Present and Future (Kalyuzhnova et al., 2002), which dealt with different aspects — geological, political, religious — of energy issues in the Caspian Sea region. The current volume covers the same region, but concentrates on the economic issues of hydrocarbon wealth and relations between companies and governments which are in the end the most important influences on the exploration and production of any natural resource. This book thus tackles issues that have previously been given limited consideration in the literature, such as the role of the operating companies and the prudential management of hydrocarbon wealth in the Caspian Sea region. The challenge for governments in designing an optimal energy policy is also touched on in the book.
