Abstract

This chapter explores the design and performance of inverse Gaussian few-mode fibers (IG-FMFs) for future optical networking systems. The focus is on enhancing transmission capacity and spectral efficiency through the use of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes. The chapter reviews design principles for OAM-supporting fibers and introduces a new class of IG-FMFs based on a Gaussian-inspired refractive index distribution. Key topics include the influence of shape parameters on mode confinement, intermodal separation, chromatic dispersion, and differential group delay. The performance of selected IG-FMFs is evaluated across the C+L bands, demonstrating superior intermodal separation and favorable transmission characteristics compared to existing designs. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the potential of IG-FMFs for next-generation optical communication systems, highlighting their advantages in supporting robust OAM channels and their compatibility with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM).
