Abstract

The chapter delves into the significance of bentonite as a sealing material in nuclear waste disposal, focusing on its capacity to sorb bisulphide produced by sulphate-reducing bacteria. It highlights the potential corrosion risks to copper-coated used fuel containers and the need to understand bisulphide sorption onto bentonite. The study presents a systematic methodology for conducting batch experiments, including the preparation of stock solutions, sample handling, and determination of sorption efficiency. Preliminary results guide the selection of optimal experimental conditions such as liquid-to-solid ratio and initial bisulphide concentration. The design of four sets of batch experiments is outlined to investigate the influence of temperature, pH, ionic strength, and contact time on bisulphide sorption. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of these findings for the long-term safety assessment of deep geological repositories and their potential application in future environmental research.
