Abstract

This chapter delves into the challenges posed by the lack of legal identification in Africa and the limitations of current digital identity management systems. It introduces self-sovereign identity (SSI) as a promising solution, highlighting its potential to improve privacy, security, and user experience. The study adopts a deductive approach, combining the value-based adoption model with the protection motivation theory to investigate the factors influencing SSI adoption intentions among South Africans. A real-world KYC banking use case is employed to provide context, and partial least squares analysis is used to evaluate the model. The findings reveal positive perceptions of SSI's usefulness, enjoyment, and security benefits, while concerns about technicality and cost remain. The chapter concludes by summarizing the research contributions and suggesting avenues for future work.
