Investigating the mediating role of executive function in the relationship between sleep disturbance and mind wandering

This study delves into the complex interplay between sleep disturbances, executive functions, and mind wandering, shedding light on how poor sleep quality can impact cognitive control and mental well-being. The research employs a cross-sectional design with a sample of 227 university students, utilizing self-report measures to assess sleep quality, executive functions, and mind wandering. Key findings reveal significant correlations between sleep disturbances, deficits in self-organization/problem-solving, and increased mind wandering. However, the study found no evidence that executive functions mediate the relationship between sleep disturbance and mind wandering, suggesting that other mechanisms may be at play. The research also highlights the importance of considering gender differences and the potential role of memory in this complex relationship. Furthermore, the study challenges the notion of mind wandering as uniformly maladaptive, indicating that a certain level of inhibitory capacity is essential for mind wandering. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the intricate link between sleep, cognition, and mental health, offering valuable insights for future research and clinical applications.
