Abstract

This chapter explores the ergonomic risks associated with manual forestry work, focusing on the physical demands and potential for work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The study introduces a new approach using biomechanical models and force sensors to assess these risks more accurately than traditional observation-based methods. The research selects manual skidding as a reference scenario and investigates the influence of working conditions such as posture, ground conditions, and soil slope on physical workload. Through empirical laboratory studies and field validations, the study finds that while compression forces indicate a medium risk, shear forces suggest a high risk, contrasting with the medium risk assessed by the Key Indicator Method (KIM). The chapter concludes that this biomechanical approach enhances risk assessment accuracy and can be applied to other forestry activities or even different industries.
