Abstract

This study delves into the electric vehicle routing problem (EVRP), a critical challenge in modern logistics, focusing on the design of routing rules using genetic programming. The research examines four key design choices in routing schemes, including route construction strategies, customer selection methods, charging station selection strategies, and the timing of charging station insertion. The study evaluates the performance of these design choices across different problem types, such as random, clustered, and random-clustered instances, with tight and loose service time windows. The results demonstrate that the parallel route construction method consistently outperforms the serial method, particularly for clustered instances. However, the effectiveness of other design choices varies depending on the problem instance type. The study also investigates the evolution time and complexity of priority functions, finding that these factors are not significantly influenced by the different design choices. The findings highlight the importance of tailoring routing schemes to specific problem characteristics and provide valuable insights for improving the efficiency of electric vehicle routing in real-world logistics operations.
