Abstract

This chapter investigates the travel mode choice for work trips in Imphal, India, focusing on the impact of various transportation alternatives and socio-economic factors. The study identifies eight primary modes of transportation, including auto, share auto/e-rickshaw, cycle rickshaw/cycles, taxi, eco-van, office vehicle, car pool, Tata Magic, bus, car, and two-wheelers. The research employs multinomial logit and nested logit models to analyze commuter behavior and the influence of factors such as travel time, travel cost, and socio-economic variables. The study finds that the choice of travel mode is significantly influenced by socio-economic factors such as age, gender, and income, as well as the availability of transportation alternatives. The analysis reveals that the demand for transportation modes is relatively inelastic, indicating that commuters are less likely to switch modes in response to changes in travel costs. The study also evaluates the potential impact of policy interventions, such as the introduction of electric autos, on commuter behavior and transportation planning. The findings provide valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers seeking to improve transportation infrastructure and services in Imphal and similar urban areas.
