Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate dynamics of laminar separation bubbles (LSBs) in low Reynolds number flows, a critical aspect affecting the performance of autonomous aircraft and turbines. By introducing controlled disturbances into the boundary layer, the study sheds light on the transient regime of LSB formation and bursting events. Experimental methods, including phase-locked planar PIV, were employed to capture the velocity fields in the LSB region. The results validate the apparatus and methods against existing benchmarks and present detailed measurements of the transient regime. The chapter highlights the sensitivity of LSBs to various flow conditions and the importance of understanding their dynamics for accurate modeling and performance optimization.
