Abstract

Ireland’s relations with Russia have been significantly influenced by geography, neutrality, and EU membership. This chapter traces the evolution of these relations, from the post-Cold War era of engagement to the more recent tensions arising from Russia's intervention in Ukraine. It examines Ireland's balanced approach, which seeks to maintain economic ties while adhering to EU sanctions and diplomatic stances. The chapter also delves into new challenges, such as Russian intelligence activities and cyberattacks, which have added complexity to the bilateral relationship. Despite these issues, Ireland continues to engage with Russia cautiously, reflecting a broader strategy of maintaining peace and stability while protecting its economic interests.
