Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate relationship between populism and democracy, exploring how populism can both threaten and revitalize democratic systems. It begins by defining populism as an ideology or strategy that divides society into two opposing camps: the ordinary people versus the corrupt elite. The text examines the global rise of populism, with examples from various countries, and discusses whether populism is digging democracy's grave or serving as a wake-up call for a more democratic democracy. The chapter also explores how populists wield power, including their use of media and their attempts to undermine democratic institutions. It presents three interpretations of the logical problem at the core of democracy, which populism seeks to exploit. The text concludes by discussing the role of -isms and prefixes in the debate about populism and democracy, suggesting that the rise of populism may indicate a shift in the way democracy is perceived and practiced.
