Is the Electrification of the Private Transport Sector a Feasible and Sustainable Alternative?

The increased concern regarding global CO₂ emissions and their impact on climatic conditions has raised a lot of regulatory constraints and restrictions regarding private transportation and changes in car propulsion systems. The new regulation established in high-populated cities may not be aligned with problems perceived by residents living in low-populated density areas. Electrification has been perceived with skepticism by many citizens, and market behavior has demonstrated that the initial steep increase in sales associated with electric vehicles is reaching a freezing point. Once early adopters of electrification were involved in the acquisition of an electric vehicle, the market is now experiencing a decline in the rate of electric vehicle sales because the following segment of clients do not find clear benefits in buying this kind of technology. Various reasons are often stated to explain this performance, and these are discussed in the current document. However, the main question that should be answered is whether electrification is really a sustainable solution for urban mobility. Considering the diversity in urban distribution, population income, and population preferences, it seems that citizens are more receptive to a hybrid mobility approach.
