Abstract

This chapter explores the feasibility and sustainability of electrifying the private transport sector, focusing on the challenges and implications of transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) and other alternative propulsion systems. It examines the economic, social, and environmental factors influencing this transition, highlighting the complexities and potential pitfalls of achieving a fully decarbonized transport sector. The text delves into the current state of EV technology, infrastructure, and market adoption, as well as the potential disruptions and injustices that may arise from a rapid transition to electric mobility. It also discusses the role of hybrid vehicles as a transitional technology and the importance of considering the entire lifecycle of vehicles, including raw material demand and recycling networks. The chapter concludes that while electrification may eventually be a sustainable and feasible alternative, it requires careful evaluation and a more paused transition to allow all partners involved to adapt to a completely different structure.
