Abstract

The article investigates the profound impact of career shocks on career development, focusing on how unexpected events can significantly alter professional trajectories. It explores the concept of career shocks, which are disruptive events beyond an individual's control, and their influence on work attitudes and career management. The study delves into the mediating role of emotional exhaustion, highlighting how this psychological strain can either hinder or facilitate career development depending on the nature of the career shock. Furthermore, the article examines the moderating effect of career self-efficacy, demonstrating how an individual's belief in their ability to manage their career can mitigate the negative impacts of career shocks. Through a meticulously designed research methodology, including a time-lagged approach and structural equation modeling, the study provides empirical evidence supporting the proposed hypotheses. The findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms through which career shocks affect career development, emphasizing the importance of emotional resilience and self-efficacy in navigating professional challenges. The article concludes with practical implications for organizations and individuals, suggesting strategies to enhance career development and mitigate the adverse effects of career shocks.
