Abstract

This study delves into the intersection of mental health literacy and digital technology, focusing on the use of large language models (LLMs) to create interactive narratives for college students. The research evaluates a visual novel prototype designed to reduce misconceptions about depression and enhance mental health literacy. Key topics include the impact of LLMs on narrative engagement, the effectiveness of interactive storytelling in correcting false beliefs, and the potential of digital interventions to support mental health education. The study found that the prototype significantly reduced misconceptions about depression among participants, although overall depression literacy scores remained high, suggesting a potential ceiling effect. Qualitative feedback highlighted the perceived authenticity and emotional engagement of the LLM-generated narratives, indicating their potential for fostering reflection and immersion. The research also explores the ethical considerations and limitations of using AI in mental health interventions, emphasizing the need for transparency and human oversight. The findings suggest that LLMs can be powerful tools for creating personalized, engaging, and scalable mental health interventions, paving the way for more inclusive and impactful mental health literacy initiatives.
