Abstract

The chapter delves into the vast, untapped potential of ocean wave energy, highlighting its superior energy density and consistency compared to solar and wind sources. It addresses the significant challenges in wave energy conversion, such as economic viability and device survivability in harsh ocean conditions. The focus is on developing a small-scale wave energy converter (WEC) for aquafarms, which typically rely on diesel generators for power. The design process involves numerical modeling, prototyping, and extensive testing, including shaker and wave flume experiments. The iterative design of the point absorber WEC aims to produce 100 W of power, with scalability and survivability in mind. The chapter details the selection of a magnetic coupling system and a helix mechanism to convert linear motion into electrical power, along with the challenges and solutions encountered during prototyping. Experimental results from wave flume tests demonstrate the device's performance and areas for improvement, paving the way for future deployments and optimizations.
