Taking place in Mississippi in 1964, the Freedom Summer was one of the most important sustaining factors of the Modern Civil Rights Movement. Organized by the Council of Federated Organizations, the Freedom Summer involved the recruitment of volunteers–largely white Northern students–to register Black citizens to vote while also building community aid centers (Jelinek 6). Legal protection was a critical aspect of these efforts. Civil rights workers and Black citizens were often subject to political repression by the White Power Structure, including frequent arrests to drain organizations’ funds and diminish their ability to conduct business. …
