Taking place in Mississippi in 1964, the Freedom Summer was one of the most important sustaining factors of the Modern Civil Rights Movement. Organized by the Council of Federated Organizations, the Freedom Summer involved the recruitment of volunteers–largely white Northern students–to register Black citizens to vote while also building community aid centers (Jelinek 6). Legal protection was a critical aspect of these efforts.
