A Comparison of Reliability Coefficients for Ordinal Rating Scales

Kappa coefficients are commonly used for quantifying reliability on a categorical scale, whereas correlation coefficients are commonly applied to assess reliability on an interval scale. Both types of coefficients can be used to assess the …

A Unified Theory of the Completeness of Q-Matrices for the DINA Model

Diagnostic classification models in educational measurement describe ability in a knowledge domain as a composite of specific binary skills called “cognitive attributes,” each of which an examinee may or may not have mastered. Attribute Hierarchy …

Polarized Classification Tree Models: Theory and Computational Aspects

In this paper, a new approach in classification models, called Polarized Classification Tree model, is introduced. From a methodological perspective, a new index of polarization to measure the goodness of splits in the growth of a classification …

Wavelet Multidimensional Scaling Analysis of European Economic Sentiment Indicators

We propose the use of wavelet coefficients, which are generated from nondecimated discreet wavelet transforms, to form a correlation-based dissimilarity measure in metric multidimensional scaling. This measure enables the construction of …

Clustering Brain Signals: a Robust Approach Using Functional Data Ranking

In this paper, we analyze electroencephalograms (EEGs) which are recordings of brain electrical activity. We develop new clustering methods for identifying synchronized brain regions, where the EEGs show similar oscillations or waveforms according …

About this journal

The Journal of Classification presents original and valuable papers in the field of classification, numerical taxonomy, multidimensional scaling and other ordination techniques, clustering, tree structures and other network models, as well as associated models and algorithms for fitting them. Articles support advances in methodology, while demonstrating compelling substantive applications.

The journal also publishes comprehensive review articles.

Among the disciplines represented are statistics, psychology, biology, information retrieval, anthropology, archeology, astronomy, business, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, geography, geology, linguistics, marketing, mathematics, medicine, political science, psychiatry, sociology, and soil science.

Published three times a year, each issue typically comprises four sections: articles, short notes and comments, software abstracts, and book reviews.

The Editor-in-Chief is Douglas Steinley, Department of Psychological Sciences, University of Missouri, USA.
